Javad Khani, the Director of the department dealing with unauthorized immigrants at the National Immigration Organization, revealed in an interview with IRNA that the repatriation process began in tandem with the initiation of the organization’s activities in August.
The individuals repatriated had entered Iran illegally, and the process is being carried out based on a comprehensive plan in eight provinces hosting the highest number of immigrants.
Officials have identified Tehran, Sistan and Baluchestan, Razavi Khorasan, Qom, Kerman, Yazd, Fars, and Alborz as the provinces with the highest immigrant populations. These provinces accommodate 92% of the immigrant population, leading to an estimation that the country hosts around four million legal immigrants.
The Islamic Republic has issued one million smart ID cards for migrants thus far, Khani said, adding that the authorities are pursuing a division of labor among provinces to expedite the organization of migrants throughout the country.
